Friday 22nd August — Studio Day #1I’ve never written a blog before. Mostly because I’ve always thought: do I really have anything worth saying? But I’ve been going a bit mad lately. The world feels precarious this year, and I keep meeting people with ironclad opinions that, to me, seem like backwards steps for humanity. That story could fill a blog of its own.For now, this is about sanity — and excitement. Somewhere between those two things, this blog has begun. Some people say great songs are born from distraction. Sometimes, for sure. But a record worth keeping? That takes focus. So before rolling into LoveStreet Studios in Currumbin to link up with engineer/musician/producer Scott French and Australian drumming powerhouse Lisa Purmodh, I grabbed one last thing: a stack of vinyl. These were the records that had been soundtracking my life these last few years — whilst living in Japan, and back home in Burleigh Heads. They’d quietly seeded the idea of this project. I first heard dub in London in the mid-90s. Since then, I’ve always said yes whenever someone asked me to sit in or play gigs with reggae bands. My first daughter was born to Bob Marley records spinning in the room. And after years of searching for “that sound I kept hearing here and there,” I realised it was the classic dub of the 1970s.I’ve played these LPs over and over. The dub sound has everything I love about music: deep melodic basslines, heavy groove, honest/political/spiritual lyrics, fearless use of FX, a rich history, and above all — music that moves you.If the records were in the room with me, they’d serve as a reminder. Like Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Black Ark walls plastered with images and talismans. For me, it was these records. The mission was clear: make something I’d love just as much as them.I’d been writing demos for this project since the day I walked back into my house after returning from the Central Coast, where lifelong friends and I had just farewelled one of my dearest brothers and music collaborators — Patrick Burke. The music came at me from every direction, so I kept tracking it, night and day. I sent a few demos to a handful of friends. My brother in music, Jashuyn Karabash (Vesica Pisces), encouraged me, surfed with me through the process, and helped refine the tracks.Cindia Luzi — Australian Afro-Cuban percussionist and composer, among many other things — suggested I reach out to one of the world’s finest reggae and dub drummers. My immediate reply: “Really, Cin? I don’t know if I can.” I thought she might politely decline, and any advice she offered would have been more than enough. But she didn’t decline. She dug it. And suddenly we were working on dates. So, I placed that stack of dub LPs on Scott’s studio desk — a quiet offering, a reminder of what we were aiming for.And then… Lisa Purmodh walked in.BOOM. Majik. Rad.
